Social Media is different then regular Media as it is not a place for static messaging that is directed towards a captive audience.
The audience in this case can respond, share, ask questions, and bond with your company, your brand, and your employees. Humans being social by nature, typically want to interact with those that are selling their services to them. They do not simply buy based on cost alone. Many buy because they have formed a relationship with the service provider. When that relationship is solidified, the customer may go well out of their way to visit that business, or they may refer others there so that they can experience the great service that they had received.
Referrals have traditionally been used in the Insurance business and the banking industry. Passing off cards and collecting lists of names is common practice for those that understand that a satisfied customer may lead to many more in the future; if they simply share their experience with others!
Social Media has become the online place to share that experience! With the Facebook "Like" button and the Google "+1" button leading the pack in the evolution of sharing information quickly, social media has now become an instant form of referral. Relationship building with your online followers has become commonplace and when your followers share their great experiences you can expect business to increase. Your followers help you spread your marketing message far and wide to their families, their friends, through business networks, and to those whom you have never met face to face. Success can be measured by followers, inbound links to your website and your services, "buzz" surrounding your services, and of course, actual sales.
